Dian Hertel Obituary

Dian M. Hertel, 73, a cherished matriarch and beacon of gentle strength, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in her home. Born on March 19, 1951, in South Bend, to the late Robert E. Lee and Josephine (Lacapo) Ketner.

In 1969, Dian proudly graduated from Penn High School, a milestone that marked the beginning of a long and fulfilling career. She dedicated over 32 years to J & B Products, where she excelled as a Production Manager. Her colleagues remember her as a leader who led by example, with a work ethic that inspired those around her. Dian retired in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and camaraderie.

Dian's life was enriched by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael A. Hertel, and her parents. Her legacy lives on through her devoted son, Tom Longest, and her caring daughter, Joanna (Dennis) Hurt. Dian's joy was multiplied by her grandchildren, Lisa, Todd, Robert, Kevin, and Joseph, who will forever cherish the memories of their grandmother's love and guidance. She also leaves behind her sisters, Sharon (Joe) Mahone and Tonnie (James Bogash) Sanders, and her brother, James (Crystal) Copenhaver, all of whom shared in the many joys and sorrows of life with Dian.

Beyond her family and work, Dian's interests were a reflection of her zest for life. She found pleasure in the simple things, like the thrill of winning at the Blue Chip Casino or the satisfaction of a successful scratch-off. Her weekends were often spent hunting for treasures at garage sales or enjoying the competitive spirit of game shows on the Game Show Network. Dian's love for games extended to her laptop, where she was a formidable Candy Crush player, often enlisting her son Tommy's help to keep her digital pastimes running smoothly by “fixing” her laptop.

Saturdays were reserved for brunch and shopping with her sister, a tradition that both cherished deeply. Dian also enjoyed playing Kismit games with her siblings, a weekly ritual with her sister and her brother whenever he was in town. Her love for popsicles and being the family's rock were just a few of the endearing qualities that made Dian so special to those around her.

Dian's life will be celebrated with a funeral service at 11am on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN 46515, where family and friends may begin to gather at 10am.  She will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
