Wilma L (Weber) Behnke

February 24, 1928 ~ February 15, 2015 (age 86) 86 Years Old

SOUTH BEND – Wilma L. Behnke, departed life suddenly at Memorial Hospital of South Bend on February 15, 2015 at the age of 86 and 11 months. 

Wilma was born in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Pastor George and Elsie (Kallsen) Weber on February 24, 1928.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Dorn, and brothers, Norman and Ron.  

Wilma taught school for a total of 30 years including Junior High School in Iowa, Lutheran Schools in Oshkosh and Milwaukee, WI, and was a substitute teacher in South Bend, IN.  While living in Oshkosh, she started the Fireside Antique Club which is still in existence, according to the members. 

On June 10, 1951 in Scottsbluff, NE, she was united in marriage to Gene A. Behnke.  She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Gene. She is also survived by two sons, Todd (Laura) Behnke of Weisbaden, Germany, and Tyler (Kristine) Behnke of Belleville, IL; and five grandchildren. A sister, Catharine Crimmel of Asheville, NC; two brothers, Oliver (Marilyn) Weber of Bethlehem, PA, and Kenneth Weber of Pueblo, CO; and sister-in-law, Madelon Weber, survive Wilma as well.

Wilma started The Bed-N-Breakfast Registry in the nineties for Notre Dame home football weekends which at the time had over 70 homes enlisted. She sold it in 2000 upon her retirement.  She was a 54-year member of the American Association of University Women; a member of the Valparaiso University Guild and Gamma Phi.  She was also an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 805 S 29th St, South Bend, IN 46615.  Rev. Steven Latzke, pastor of the church, will officiate.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Southlawn Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be offered to Resurrection Lutheran Academy at 6840 Nimtz Parkway, South Bend, IN 46628.  Online condolences may be left for the Behnke family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.  Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
